By MaryLin Litchfield

Heart Felt is a profoundly moving exhibition by MaryLin Litchfield, created in response to the loss of her life partner.

Through bold abstract expressionist paintings, Litchfield delves into the depths of grief, love, and transformation, navigating the intimate emotional and psychological landscapes of her journey.

With strong contrasts, layered textures, and expressive mark-making, Litchfield has developed a visual language of remembrance. The series began with four small works, defined by formative colour, dynamic brushstrokes, and tactile surfaces. A pivotal moment of inspiration came from a dream image, red ochre marks across a sky-blue ground, that shaped the exhibition's emotional undercurrent and direction.

Developed over more than a year, these resonant abstractions invite viewers to bring their own experiences and interpretations to Heart Felt, discovering personal meaning within its powerful visual language.

About MaryLin

MaryLin Litchfield’s distinctive style of contemporary abstract expressionism forms a dynamic connection between her inner and outer worlds. Her paintings reference the colors and rhythmic forms of the natural environment, with layered shapes, subtle tones, free brush marks, and textures inviting viewers into psychological and emotive imaginative spaces.

Her work is a deeply internalized translation of the organic processes of emotional growth and psychological change. Each painting resonates with open possibility, luminosity, and emotional energy, offering a space for personal interpretation.

MaryLin lives and creates in the temperate rainforest of the Dandenong Ranges near Narrm (Melbourne). She holds a bachelor’s degree in painting and has spent many years joyfully exploring this contemporary and ancient art form. Currently, she is an emerging artist in residence at the Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey, where she continues to experiment with art materials and tools to create her dynamic abstractions.

Using acrylic and mixed media, MaryLin’s work emphasises vigorous brushwork and rhythmic composition. Her paintings invite viewers to engage with their own perceptions, finding meaning and resonance within the layers of her art.

"My abstract expressionist work has become the vessel for a heartfelt journey, navigating deep emotional confrontation and resolution."
