A Performance and Nature Immersion Workshop

Join us for a unique workshop that blends art, nature, and climate action led by actor and theatre maker Catherine Abigail Ward.

About the Workshop

This active workshop explores our local bird species and the ecosystems through the lens of performance and puppetry.

You will learn simple puppet-making techniques to create your own bird, while exploring animal behaviour and movement to understand how to "flock" together as a group. Using ‘observe’ and ‘replicate’ modes of making, participants will get insights into how performers and puppeteers can partner with conservationists, scientists, and activists to share stories and create powerful emotional connections with the natural world.

Catherine will also share personal reflections on her involvement with The Herds, "a profound and extraordinary experience in all ways".

All materials are provided, and everyone is welcome. No experience is needed, just a willingness to create and connect.

The Story Behind the Project

Touring 20,000km from Kinshasa in the Congo Basin to Nordkapp in the Arctic Circle, The Herds was an unprecedented public art and climate initiative presenting life-size puppet animals fleeing climate disaster. Responding to the urgency of the science and communities' lived experiences, it was a massive, intensely creative call for determined global climate action.

Catherine spent three months performing with The Herds and was the only Australian in the cast of puppeteers. Drawing from this "profound and extraordinary" journey, she guides participants through a hands-on session that engages directly with the urgent messages of conservation.

The Herds is a project of The Walk Productions which also produced Little Amal, now a global human rights symbol.

Proudly presented by Burrinja Cultural Centre in collaboration with CLIMARTE, a local award winning, globally recognised arts and climate Creative Producer.
