Exhitbition Opening - RSVPStill Rock, Living Water presents a new body of landscape paintings by Liberty Finn, developed during a month-long residency in Natimuk, north-western Victoria.
Exploring ancient rock formations, waterfalls and expansive skies, the works reflect on vitality, stillness and the enduring presence of landscape across deep geological time.
About the Work
Created following a period of deep exhaustion and burnout, this series marks a return to connection and renewal. Immersing herself in the environments surrounding Mt Arapiles and the Grampians, Finn walked, drew and photographed the region, experiencing both solitude and a profound connection to place.
The enduring presence of rock became a central focus. Through layered compositions informed by photographic montage, capturing landscape as it is truly experienced—fluid, shifting and immersive. Perspectives move side to side, up and down, allowing the viewer’s eye to wander through each scene.
These works explore the paradox of the Australian bush: wild and irregular, yet capable of evoking deep calm. In reflecting on geological time, Finn considers landscapes that existed long before us and will endure long after.
A Quiet Reflection
In an era of environmental uncertainty, Still Rock, Living Water offers a contemplative space, one that speaks to resilience, stillness and the quiet endurance of the natural world.
Liberty Finn is a landscape painter whose work is grounded in direct observation and drawing in the Australian bush. She is fascinated by the landscape's intricate character and often returns to the same places across seasons and years. Her paintings explore the interplay between stillness and vitality, embracing the wild complexity of the bush and its cycles of decay and regrowth.
For the past five years Liberty has focused on the forests of the Dandenong Ranges. In May 2025 she undertook an artist residency in the Wimmera, where she was captivated by the rocky landscapes, expansive skies and waterfalls of the Grampians region. She is currently developing a new body of work for a solo exhibition at Burrinja Cultural Centre in July 2026.
