with Lachlan Case

In this hands-on Trash Art workshop, Lachlan will invite participants to take discarded materials and let their imaginations run wild. With a little glue, some screws, a generous supply of cable ties and a willingness to experiment, everyday junk can become something entirely new.

The workshop will use junk bots. Little scrappy, WALL-E-like robots as a starting point, but there are no rules about what your creation has to become. Participants will be encouraged to follow their curiosity, experiment with materials and see where the process takes them.

Along the way, you'll discover that making art from found materials is as much about problem-solving as it is about creativity. Which piece should become an arm, a body or something completely different? What happens when you only have one of a particular object? How do you make unlikely materials stick together? How big is too big? And what makes a sculpture stable enough to stand?

This is an opportunity to rethink what we consider useful, interesting or valuable. A broken object, an old piece of hardware or a seemingly useless bit of plastic might just be the most exciting material in the room.

Junk materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring along any discarded objects, odd bits and pieces, or mysterious treasures that inspire them. You never know what they might become.

Come with an open mind, a curious eye and a willingness to make a mess. There’s no wrong way to make trash art.

About the Facilitator

Lachlan Case is a crafter, hoarder and passionate lover of reclaimed materials. To Lachlan, discarded objects are rarely just rubbish — they’re materials waiting for a second life and an opportunity to become something unexpected.

For the past 15 years, Lachlan has been building sets and props for short films and theatre productions, as well as running sculpture and upcycling workshops. He has been building, painting, making things and generally making a mess since he was a very small child, and brings that same sense of play and curiosity to his creative practice today.
