HILLSIDE FILM FESTIVAL
FRIDAY 19 TH + SATURDAY 20 TH FEBRUARY 2010
SEE WHAT STATE THE FUTURE OF FILM IS IN!
The fifth installment of the Hillside Film Festival , formally the Blue Dandenongs Young Filmmakers Festival continues to be a unique voice in the crowd of film festivals across the country, showcasing the best short films from emerging Victorian filmmakers aged under 30. With a swag of brilliant submissions from across the State, you now have the opportunity to see an exceptional selection of the very best shorts we could find up on the big screen at Cameo's beautiful outdoor cinema .
Live performances from bands including Innerspace, Yo Hosie and Vox Populous will also open each evenings screenings on the outdoor cinema stage from 7pm. The future of Australian cinema is here!
Saturday night will feature 8 of the best new home grown short films in the State, taking you on a journey through the imaginations of the next generation of filmmakers. Hilarious junior interview artist Sam Tool argues with Rove and frightens Hamish and Andy ( Interview Artist Part 2 ), a flirtation in a Laundromat takes an interesting turn when a gun appears ( The Laundromat ), things get very scary for a hitchhiker in the middle of nowhere ( The Last Mile ), and grandpa chokes on a Hungry Hippo ball in a black comedy with a heart of gold ( Choke ).
These filmmakers will be competing for some brilliant prizes, with awards judged by some of the best in the industry including AFI award-winning Sandra Sciberras , Bridget Callow , and Ray Mooney . A new partnership with the Aurora Community Channel also gives the entrants the opportunity to showcase their work on a national level when the festival films screen through Foxtel for National Youth Week in 2010.
This year we are also offering a rare opportunity to see the cult underground hit Surfing 50 States up on the big screen on Friday night . This new indie doco follows the adventures of two young Aussie mates who set out to surf all 50 states of America one way or another. Jonno + Stefan manage to achieve their goal by any means possible, whether it be surfing the frigid waves of Alaska, being towed by a cowboy in Texas, or surfing down a 15 foot pile of potatoes in Idaho. SurfingWorld magazine has described Surfing 50 States as ‘the best surfing film I've seen in ages ' ' - despite the fact the boys can hardly surf!
As always, the screening program will be complimented by a range of arts, music and more. There will be a garden party in the gorgeous gardens at Earthly Pleasures Organic café on Saturday , kick on parties at the Bluestone Bar both nights, and as much live music, roving performers and tall green forests as we can fit into one little festival in a hilltop village. “The Hillside Film Festival has proven itself to be a unique film festival, showcasing the future of Australian filmmaking and giving audiences a preview of the exciting things to come.
With a focus on artistic excellence and innovation, audiences are given a glimpse of some of Australia 's most interesting young filmmaking across all genres, styles and budgets”. – Jaime Snyder (Hillside Film Festival award winner, 2008)
