| SEBASTIAN NICHOLAS
BURST AND BLOOM 3 June – 11 July
Sunday all day - Sebastian Nicholas Burst and Bloom is an enchanting new series of work by Canadian born local Belgrave artist Sebastian Nicholas. Drawings and paintings in this exhibition feature the Bunnyman character travelling through a series of dreamlike landscapes, interacting with giant cockatoos, monkeys and apes. Sebastian's beautiful and whimsical artwork draws on personal memories and dreams, telling elusive universal stories that are strangely familiar. 'I am interested in the character of the rabbit as the archetypal trickster. During one boyhood stage, I wore a rabbit costume for days on end, enjoying the identity of the Bunny. The Bunnyman figure has resurfaced many times in my work over the years and now has an added depth considering Australia's historical relationship with the rabbit.' - Sebastian Nicholas.
Burst and Bloom refers to the spontaneous and dynamic impulse that drives a dormant seedling from its shell, through the soil, around stones, and up against the pull of gravity towards the light of the sun. 'The pieces in Burst and Bloom are the result of encouraging and labouring my own artistic impulses into fruition, allowing and making space for them up in the sunlight. Each piece evolves in its own way and it’s always a challenge to accept them and trust that they will grow into a viable artwork. I have enjoyed returning to drawing figures and have freed myself from the obligation for the scenes to make literal sense. The images are mainly derived from a mixed bag of thoughts, dreams and memories. With all of my work there is a simple fascination with the illusion of an object's volume and its relationship to the space around it.'- Sebastian Nicholas
Sebastian came to Australia from Canada in 1998 and has lived in the
Dandenong Ranges for nearly 5 years, settling in Belgrave. Sebastian
completed his Masters in Creative Arts Therapy at RMIT in 2005 and is
currently working in community arts therapy in Ferntree Gully. Sebastian
has exhibited widely in Canada and across Australia. SUPERHERO PARTY |

| IN THE BEGINNING Joy Serwylo 1 DECEMBER 2009 – 10 JANUARY 2010 In the beginning fable and religion were inexorably intertwined, causing no end of confusion. They still are. For this exhibition Joy plays with old bits of paper, biblical excerpts and the idea of religion and fantasy in today's unreal world. Some excavating, some reconstructing, tearing and drawing, some are serious and some are frivolous, but all will be irreverent. www.serwylo.com |
