0 "This large and important collection of artworks, photographs and archival material was accumulated over a lifetime's experiences gained from my deep involvement with indigenous people from various parts of Australia and Papua New Guinea. Many of the works are extremely rare and of invaluable ethnographic significance and constitute a valuable repository of evidence of rapidly disappearing cultures. My wish is for this unique resource to remain in the Shire of Yarra Ranges where it will be an enjoyable asset for local people and visitors to the hills and so that it may educate and foster understanding of the creators of the works." Neil McLeod. August 2001. 0

0 Neil McLeod - 'Uncle Neil' to many - is an exceptional individual and member of our community who has devoted his life's work to helping others. Through his travels and work around Australia and in the Pacific region, he has met many indigenous artists and made many friends. The symbols of his friendships are the many artworks he has collected over the years. 0

0 In the true spirit of generosity with which he has been met in his travels, Neil is now making a great philanthropic gesture by giving a number of these artworks to the people of the Shire of Yarra Ranges. This is an honour for us as a community, not only because of the exceptional quality and great value of the works, but because he is sharing these friendships with us, the people of the Yarra Ranges. In a very special way, he has included us in his community of friends that stretches from New Guinea to Adelaide and from Perth to the Pacific Islands. 0

0 Ingiet Figures: (Above) The small stone figures were one of the few manifestations of the 'Ingiet Society' which, by means of extortion and murder had a great influence over all the people. This tradition had been brought by the ancestral Tolai when they migrated from central New Ireland to the Gazelle Peninsula of New Britain. These figures in the Neil McLeod collection are quite unique, surpassed only by the collections made by the Germans in the early 20th century. 0

| 0 It is with the same mutual trust, respect and understanding of true friendship, that 'Uncle Neil' McLeod has now entrusted the Shire of Yarra Ranges and our community with the care of these precious works. This is our challenge and in holding this trust, we will endeavour to foster and encourage a greater understanding among all who view these artworks of the cultures and artists that produced this precious gift.'
