Exhibition Dates: South Island Tour 2002 - 2003

The exhibition will open initially at the Christchurch Centre of Contemporary Art
on November 20, 2002.

It will then tour to six regional South Island galleries before returning to Australia in October 2003.

Footprint of the Spirits – Burrinja Collection
is part of a cultural exchange between Christchurch and The Shire of Yarra Ranges, and centres around
liaison between Ngai Tahu and Aboriginal artists. Two Aboriginal artists, Heather Umbagai and Peterson Nganjmirra
are travelling to Christchurch with curator Neil McLeod for the exhibition opening and will be hosted by Ngai Tahu. In 2003 reciprocal exhibitions by leading Ngai Tahu artists are planned for Melbourne and Sydney.

‘Burrinja’ is the Yorta Yorta Aboriginal word for star
and also the traditional name given to Lin Onus, artist and Aboriginal activist. Burrinja Gallery,
in the Shire of Yarra Ranges on the outskirts of Melbourne, was named to celebrate Lin’s memory.
